Gi BJJ classes are undertaken in a traditional Gi (kimono) uniform. This grappling style is grip-heavy as both you and your partner can grab one another’s clothing.
The benefits of these grips make for many exciting techniques and submissions that are not possible in the other forms of grappling.
Uniform
As the name suggests, NOGI training is undertaken without the GI uniform. This style of grappling is generally faster and more dynamic than GI grappling. No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu uses body mechanics and wrestling techniques including positions and submissions that are not allowed and/or not available in the GI.
MMA style shorts and a rash guard. If you don’t have a rash guard then a t-shirt is fine for the first couple of classes. Please note, there should be no zips and/or buttons (and preferably no pockets) on any item of clothing and please ensure your finger and toe nails are short.

We train with GI but if you’re new to BJJ, it’s fine to wear shorts/leggings and a t-shirt for your first couple of classes. However, please note, there should be no zips and/or buttons on any item of clothing. Please also ensure your finger nails and toenails are short so you don’t accidentally scratch anyone.
All our classes start with a warm up (Individual warm-up, individual movement drills, basic partner drills or a vigorous conditioning warm up). Instructors then move on to demonstrate techniques, set ups and positions. Students then drill these and use them in the sparring that follows.
A BJJ No-Gi Competition Class is a specialized training session focused on preparing practitioners for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions without the traditional gi. Here’s a breakdown of what this type of class typically includes:
1. Intensive Warm-Up: Starts with mobility drills, dynamic stretches, and movement exercises to build agility, explosiveness, and endurance specific to No-Gi.
2. Takedown and Stand-Up Work: Emphasis on wrestling techniques, such as double legs, single legs, and clinch work. Since there’s no gi to grip, this training focuses on body control and leverage rather than grips on clothing.
3. No-Gi Specific Techniques: Techniques like front headlocks, guillotines, arm drags, and leg locks, which are more common in No-Gi, are practiced. Entries into positions and submissions are modified to be effective without gi grips.
4. Positional Drills and Situational Sparring: Short, intense drills that start from key competition positions—like side control, back control, and guard recovery—designed to mimic the pace and pressure of a match.
5. High-Intensity Rolling (Sparring): Timed sparring rounds with a focus on competition strategies, with partners rotating to mimic the demands of a tournament.
6. Mental Strategy and Competition Tips: Coaches often provide insights on tournament strategy, point scoring, time management, and tactics for dealing with common No-Gi situations.
7. Conditioning and Cooldown: Conditioning work that focuses on explosive power, grip endurance, and body control, followed by a cooldown to promote flexibility and recovery.
A No-Gi Competition Class pushes the intensity, hones technique, and sharpens strategy for practitioners aiming to compete, especially under the high-paced, gripless dynamics of No-Gi BJJ.
